M—A (A Space Between)
Photography
Always beautiful, the fourth issue of this large-format photographic magazine is particularly stunning. Presenting images collected by editor Joe Richards over the past year, ‘in tutorials, in galleries, in the street,’ it brings together work by 68 artists he has spotted and collected over the past year. As he notes in his handwritten intro, ‘At a time when so much seems out of control and out of reach, what we can do is learn how to respond to our instincts, how to see the signals.’ The art flows through the pages without interuption or caption—there’s a key at the end of the issue—and as ever the design detailing changes slightly; this time an open binding and silver page edges add to the lushness of the volume. As Richard’ intro hints, the theme this time is ‘The Signal’, and artists represented include Anselm Keifer, Joy Jules, Yoko Ono and Martin Margiela. Margiela is also interviewed in the issue, as is trend forecatsr Li Edelkoort and cover artist Sun Yitian. On the JournalAt work with Jo Richards: ‘MA is an ancient term—even a philosophical state in Japan—a term that I have thought about and observed for a long time. I heard a beautiful definition from a Japanese student I knew who described it as ‘sensing the presence of someone in another room’. I thought it would be fascinating to create an ongoing visual essay meditating on this.’read more maaspacebetween.com
